Goals
Problem statement:
Our goal is to break stereotypes about gender and gender equality, to help Georgian students talk about gender and gender equality outside the academic space.
Discussions about gender equality in Georgia started after the demise of the USSR. However, gender equality and studies have become a research subject of big NGOs and academia while “gender” as a social discourse has been established in a somewhat distorted way among ordinary people.
Gender was introduced to the Georgian youth in a strange way. Everyone understood gender and gender equality in their own way, and feminism became a social “threat,, especially for boys, who think that by highlighting gender issues, women want to enslave them.
At the same time, girls also failed to understand the concept and in most cases, perceived gender equality and gender issues as deprivation of femininity, turning women in men and establishing new double standards. We were told feminism would deprive us of our traditions and our identity.
Proposed Solution:
In order to tackle this problem, we will establish a discussion club. Once a month, the club leader and members will agree on a topic and place.
Regularly, we will talk about masculinity, femininity, violence, homophobia, queer identities and gender equality in general. The conversation will be led by the speaker of the particular event, who will have specific knowledge on the certain topic.
Participation in the club will be entertaining and the students will be given opportunity to place gender issues outside the academic space and talk openly with their peers about the existing problems and challenges.
Coffee, tea, etc. will be sold during the event, which may become an additional interest for bars and cafes. Social rallies and activities will be held. The club will have a Facebook page, which will be informational and educational in nature. Besides, another group of students intends to create a website for studying masculinity, and the club will intensively cooperate with them.
To make sure that gender discussions go beyond Tbilisi and take place in the regions, the club members will also conduct discussions at regional universities or similar informal spaces. In particular we would like to reach out to young people in Poti and Telavi.
Sustainability:
After registration and the first event, the club will continue functioning. It will carry out a lot of entertaining events with the participation of students.
Equal gender opportunity:
In the realization of the idea, as well as planning and carrying out of each event in the future, students, speakers and moderators of different gender identities and sexual orientation will be equally involved.
