Goals
Problem statement:
Avlabari is an ethnically diverse neighbourhood in Tbilisi. Here Georgians, Armenians, and Russians live side by side.
I teach civil education in public school 77, and I find that the attitudes towards Armenian and other ethnic groups is not so positive. This is visible in their discussions, and students often use hate speech. The majority thinks that different ethnic groups shouldn’t live in Georgia.
I wish to create a civil education club, where not only the pupils of this school will participate in events with students of public school #98, who are of Armenian and Russian origin. We will hold a movie screening, role plays, thematic activities, discussions will be held, which on one hand will show the pupils that ethnic origin doesn’t matter when working for the common cause, and on the other hand they will see the need for each other, their awareness will be raised and they will empower their community.
Proposed Solution:
By establishing a civil club in the school and by getting different ethnic groups to participate in it, by communicating with each other, by caring for different social problems together, the pupils will not only develop their personal skills but will also be able to change their stereotypical way of thinking, reduce their negative attitudes towards different ethnic groups and give them equal opportunities, in order to make them feel as valuable citizens in the multi-cultural society.
The students involved in the civil club will share their ideas with others. We will have a more intercultural society, where our citizens are not scared of each other’s difference/diversity because they know each other better.
Sustainability:
The club will operate on a long-term basis, which ensures sustainability. Club participants will be updated annually and more young people will be given opportunity to develop. If the project is funded, the acquired items will be given to the school and they will keep being used with the same purpose as it was intended at the start of the project.
Equal gender opportunity:
20 young people will be permanent participants of the club. Ten pupils from the 9-10th grades of public school #77 and 10 pupils from public school # 98, will be selected on the basis of application and the motivation expressed by them. Gender balance will be observed; however these 20 participants will attempt to ensure the involvement of other people from the school and will carry out different activities for them.
