Goals
Problem statement:
Intersex people are still one of the most ininvisible groups in Georgia.
“Intersex” is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male.
The spread of gender stereotypes has a negative impact on intersex people, and they are often afraid of coming out. It's common for them to have no connection with the LGBTQI community. Also, formal or informal unions of intersex people do not exist in Georgia.
Sensitivity about intersex issues is low and in most cases, people don’t know that intersex people exist.
There are only few academic publications about intersex issues in Georgian language. Articles and other materials are scattered on different sites, but the information often doesn't discuss specific needs and problems. There is nothing published in Georgian which allows student researchers and other interested people to obtain the complete and correct information.
There is not any Georgian material for parents of intersex people. Some parents may decide to have their child apply for the surgery and/or hormonal therapy to change their child's sex.
Even in the LGBTQI community in Georgia, intersex sensitivity is not high and the issue is rarely discussed.
Proposed Solution:
Our goal is to create book about Intersex humans and publish it in LGBTQI community and the libraries in Tbilisi to increase positive visibility about intersex issues.
There will be information about some important issues:
* Who is Intersex;
* Intersex peoples problems and needs;
* Information for parents;
* Information for service providers;
*Other main topics.
After printing a book, we will make a presentation on Oct 26, 2017. It is Intersex Awareness Day.
Then, we will distribute books in Tbilisi's libraries (including libraries of universities) and LGBTQI offices in Tbilisi and other regions of Georgia.
Sustainability:
Our project will create academic information about intersex people's problems and needs. It will encourage discussions about Intersex people in LGBTQI community organizations.
There will be Georgian necessary informational resource for parents of Intersex people. It will assist them in making decisions and reconsidering stereotypes about their children.
Our project will allow students, researchers and other interested people to start working about Intersex issues.
Equal gender opportunity:
Our project team guarantees equal gender opportunity via involving intersex, male and female participants and empower them to be part of different activities in the future. Especially, we will involve transgender women.
