Goals
Problem statement:
While they are second biggest minority in the country, 74% of ethnic Azerbaijanis do not speak the state language. The language barrier is one the reasons their integration has been slow. The ensuing problems are myriad: they do not have access to quality education, are not informed about decisions and political events in the country and cannot meaningfully participate in social and political life. Opportunities for informal education are also scarce, especially in rural areas.
A few months ago I together with my friends opened an informal education centre on the first floor of my house in the village of Mollauglo. Ethnic Azerbaijan students and ethnic Georgian students come on a regular basis to the centre to give free classes in Georgian language, computer and Azeri language and literature. Currently 24 students, including 13 girls are members of the centre.
I need additional equipment to make our informal education programs more effective, to start new training series, professional orientation trainings, and involve the centre's students in the community activities.
Proposed Solution:
We all launch a series of trainings on informal education and will involve successful Azerbaijan and Georgian students as trainers. They will provide trainings/information sessions on topics like leadership, communication, human rights, violence against women, early marriage, bullying. Moreover, they will also act like role models for those young people in the village who are fearful of making first steps and become more active.
We will use computer and a projector screen to organize trainings and movie screenings. Additionally, we will use a camera to produce video interviews on the themes of the training and encourage students to talk on these important issues with the community. For instance, on the theme of gender based violence, we will ask community members to voice their opinion and share them on our Facebook page, which has over 1500 members.
Sustainability:
In the region where we live there is a fear of novelty. People have fear of learning about new methods, knowledge, technology, hence they refuse them. As a result of carrying out this project we will encourage them to accept novelty and help them to get education and help them prepare for a new life.
They will learn about the rules of being a citizen with high awareness. What is most important, they will be able to integrate into the Georgian society. They will know how strong we are together. They will feel themselves as legitimate citizens. After they graduate and come back to the village they will motivate the future generation to get education. As a result they will become intelligent youth who love their home country.
Equal gender opportunity:
During the project 24 high school students will attend the lectures including 13 girls.
