Goals
Problem statement:
Kabali community consists of four villages: Kabali, Ganjala, Uzuntala and Karajala. Vast majority of the population is ethnic Azeri. Basic sectors of agriculture are arable farming, livestock breading, poultry, and dairying. They sell their products in the markets of neighboring villages or the capital city.
Due to their traditions and conservative thinking, a lack of information and Georgian skills, an increasing number of early marriages mean that girls often become housewives before completing their basic education. The opportunities of these girls is limited to child-rearing and housekeeping. The girls’ social and economic rights are violated, and they are not integrated in social life. According to the studies by Vejini Union, over 70 early marriages were observed in Kabali community.
Proposed Solution:
In order to improve social and economic situation of these young housewives, the coalition of the three NGOs IWPG, “Vejini” and “Nadikvari” developed the project called “Education for Future Prosperity.”
Also, according to “Vejini” pre-project inquiry there is no local confectionary in Kabali community and the population has to go to Lagodekhi to buy cookies.
The goal of this project is to train within 20 young women in pastry production and the methods of establishing and certifying an enterprise under Georgian legislation. They will be registered as individual entrepreneurs. They will produce environment friendly products, the basic ingredients of which – milk, “matsoni” (Georgian yogurt), butter, eggs, walnuts, fruit and honey will be purchased from local farmers, which will in turn improve their economic situation too. They will sell cookies locally as well as distribute it to nearby markets.
As each village has several markets, there will be another job created: a driver for distribution. It will be possible to involve men in this activity which will make the entire community more supportive of the project.
In addition, they will be able to take catering orders for events such as festivities and weddings.
Sustainability:
The social and economic situation of uneducated young women will improve, new jobs will be created, and sales of agricultural products will increase. The successful enterprise will give momentum to other young women to enjoy the same status.
Equal gender opportunity:
This project targets women in order to improve their status, but also involves some local men.
