Goals
Problem statement:
Ethnic minorities in Georgia appear to have a low level of civil and social integration in the society. This problem is particularly definite in the communities like village Talaveri, where only Azeri population resides.
On the other hand, ethnic Georgians have very little or even no information about their fellow citizens, which creates hostility and misunderstanding between communities. This lack of understanding prevents a sustainable civil society in Georgia.
Proposed Solution:
I teach Georgian in the village school in Talaveri, Bolnisi. My colleagues and I want to organize a short-term (eight day) cultural exchange project which will provide ethnic Azeri and Georgian youth the unique opportunity to spend time together learn about each other in an informal environment.
We will involve the teachers of music, dance and civic education. The project is divided into two parts, first part will be implemented in Georgian community and Georgian families will host Azeri teenagers, while in the second part Village Talaveri Georgian students will stay with Azeri families.
During the project students will attend sessions about diversity and acceptance and friendship. In addition, they will learn traditional dances and take field trips. Participants hopefully will become more tolerant and involved citizens with skills they may not otherwise have the opportunity to develop in a formal setting.
Finally, Azeri students will have opportunity to improve their Georgian through everyday communications with their Georgian peers.
Sustainability:
The direct beneficiaries of the project will be 16 students, as this cultural exchange will create long-lasting friendships between eight Georgian and eight Azeri youngsters.
However, higher number of people from both sides will benefit (including family members, friends and community members of participants). In terms of the sustainability, the cultural understanding and cross-cultural friendships that the students receive will hopefully provide a lifetime of rewards and establish a more understanding and tolerant society.
Equal gender opportunity:
Both young men and women will be involved in our cultural exchange.
