Goals

Problem statement:

The three villages of Zemo Nikozi, Kvemo Nikozi and Zemo Khviti are located in the northern part of Gori Municipality in a conflict zone adjacent to the occupied Tskhinvali.

There is no sport or playing field in the community. Youth do not have a place to gather, to plan leisure time and to use it creatively; therefore they tend to move to the capital – Tbilisi. Young families leave villages, as a result of which they become empty.

Climbing is an interesting and attractive type of sport for adolescents. For this particular sport the essential principle is a team work, based on supporting and helping each other. As a result, a strong sense of responsibility, respect for others and self-confidence is developed among youth. With the support of Children’s and Youth Centre, our organization “Road to Peace” built an artificial climbing wall and founded the Alpinist Club in Zemo Nikozi, where more than 20 youngsters are trained, including girls. Two of our sportsmen gained second and third places in Georgian Championship in the grade of Difficult Route (Climbing).

The establishment of the Club was of great interest among youth. Despite this type of sport being unknown for many, nowadays lots of children are taking part in it and the number is increasing. Adolescents receive desire and aspire to express their possibilities, to participate in competitions and to properly plan and use leisure time.

Unfortunately, due to limited budgetary resources, we were unable to purchase a sufficient number of safety mattresses, which are very important for establishing a safe training environment. Lack of safety mattresses makes the training process difficult: we are unable to utilize full space of the wall and to train more than 6 children, as a result other adolescents have to wait before exercising. Therefore, the project seeks to purchase mattresses in order to involve as many children in training as possible and to make the training safer.

Proposed Solution:

In order to make the training process safer, easier and to involve as many children from Nikozi community as possible, it is essential to purchase more safety mattresses.

This will enable the proper utilization of the full space of the wall to train more children who will no longer have to wait before their turn to exercise. It will also ensure that the training is more comfortable and interesting.

Purchasing mattresses will also solve a safety problem, since it is essential for establishing safe and comfort environment. Furthermore, the risks of damages in case of falling will be minimized.

Most importantly, since more children will be involved in training, they will use their leisure time properly and establish a healthy lifestyle.

Sustainability:

The project will:

• Give the possibility to approximately 100 families from the 3 villages of the Nikozi community located in the conflict zone of Gori Municipality to involve their children in sporting activities without leaving the village;
• Ensure that 60 youngsters per session can be involved in training and use leisure time properly on regular basis;
• Facilitate the establishment of healthy lifestyle among youngsters living in the community;
• Provide the opportunity to youngsters living in a conflict zone to express their possibilities and to develop their identity by participating in competitions throughout Georgia;
• Make the service of the Club safer and more attractive;
• Give the possibility to our organization to conduct interesting competitions and invite experienced climbers of our country.

Equal gender opportunity:

As mentioned above, the club is open to train girls based on their interest and we have three female students right now. While we understand that more boys than girls are likely participate, we hope that the interest among girls will gradually increase, as there are already a few role models in the community.
