Goals

Problem statement:

The great influence of anthropogenic factors on the environment which is due to the difficult socioeconomic conditions in the region and the low environmental awareness of the society, makes the acute ecological problems especially prominent. It’s also worth to mention global climate change issue which is in its turn also caused by various anthropogenic and natural factors. Facts of illegal cutting of timber, including the destruction of the red list species, had especially endangered the biodiversity of the region, which has a special significance not only on the regional but also on the national level. Nowadays such red list species as high mountains oak, elm, Georgian maple, etc. are endangered. Due to the above mentioned problems it is necessary to carry out various environmental activities which will help alleviate climate change and have a positive impact on the overall biodiversity.

Proposed Solution:

The main goal of the project is to create a well-nourished nursery farm on the basis of Algeti National Park together with school pupils and rangers. The nursery will be presented in two sections: Seed, which will consist of taking willows, sowing and sprouting, and for the school, where already flourished seeds will be looked after and grown. They will be replanted after they are ready to be transferred to another territory.
At the first stage willows will be taken in the environment from the red list species: high mountains oak, elm, Georgian maple. At the same time seed material will be sown, that have a long term perspective.
With the involvement of the school children who will be given an informative lecture on trees in general, on red list species and their importance, will practically gather seeds in the nature, sow and look after the nursery, together with the community population and staff of the national park (foresters-rangers). In the nursery, in March and April, the seedlings will be sprayed, which will be planted after a year in the school section. Seed material gathering and sowing will take place in September-October of the ongoing year (during the period of seed ripening).

Sustainability:

In one space, with the principle of taking turns each year the nursery will have 500 plants to take part in a greening activity and provide events for various educational, municipal and other organizations.
In this period of time girls and boys will learn how to take care of trees and plants and other environmental issues, involve other interested people which in its turn will ensure the long-term and effective functioning of the existing nursery, as well as raising ecological awareness of the society and carrying out various environmental activities

Equal gender opportunity:

Nowadays in the schools of town Manglisi and Toneti there are groups of young rangers’ consisting of girls and boys. Their percentage ratio is roughly equal. At the first stage of the project it is planned to involve these groups.
Within the scope of the project equal involvement of boys and girls is planned, which implies their equal participation in each activity.
