Goals
Problem statement:
The issue of waste management is a serious problem in Georgia. A poor waste management system negatively affects the environment and human health.
Currently, Georgia does not have a culture of collecting and recycling waste paper or waste in general. Most recyclable paper currently goes to landfills.
As a result, we misuse our natural resources, cutting down forests and overfilling our landfills. Paper production, apart from destroying forest area, creates a high level of pollution. During its production, chlorine-based whitening materials are used, which causes the pollution of water, air and ground. Also, methane gas is emitted, which is 25 times more toxic than CO2.
Consumption of these paper resources must be reduced and re-use must be encouraged. According to research published in 2015 by World Bank Sustainable Development Network in the urban type settlement of Georgia, 34% of waste is paper. This percentage must go down.
Proposed Solution:
The mission of the social enterprise “Green Gift” is to contribute to the development of better waste management in Georgia and education the public on its importance.
The initiative “Waste Paper ≠ Trash” intends to carry out informational meetings and training in 15 educational institutions (5 public schools, 5 universities and 5 learning centers). They will be free of charge and led by master program students of the GIPA environmental management and policy.
After the informational meetings, weekly waste paper collection events will be held at the educational institutions, and green recycling boxes established.
“Green Gift” will provide transportation to the paper recycling factories of the waste collected in the educational institutions selected by the project. Apart from waste paper collection week, “Green Gift” will sign a cooperation memorandum with the educational institutions on the basis of which both sides will cooperate to implement environmental educational activities, find small-grants and implement projects.
In case of interest, we will help them to establish eco clubs in their institutions from the next academic year, which will raise awareness of the teachers/students and develop their environmental skills.
It is a known fact that by recycling 1 ton of paper, we will save approximately 17 trees, 2800 liters of oil and 26 500 liters of water. “Green Gift” plans to collect and recycle at least 20 tons of paper which will save approximately 340 trees, 56 000 liters of oil and 530 000 liters of water. While recycling paper resources 73% less greenhouse gases are produced, than during the primary production of paper, and this is the most important positive impact of paper waste recycling
Sustainability:
"Green Gift” aims to collect waste paper from partner organizations and individuals, recycle the collected paper, and use the paper received from the recycled waste paper to make a new product.
The initiative will also raise social awareness about the issue. At the moment “Green Gift” has about 20 acting organizations and institutions in Tbilisi and our aim is to increase this network. This means that this initiative will be implemented not only to hold short-term activities but is also aimed at long-term cooperation.
Equal gender opportunity:
