Goals
Problem statement:
Vejini is a villages in Kakheti where gender equality is a new phenomenon. Women, especially the middle-aged and elderly, work hard on domestic chores and providing financially for the family by working as daily hired workers on farmlands. Meanwhile, men enjoying themselves by standing on “Birzhas” (a space for idle gathering). This division is considered natural.
Even when women’s and men’s work is shared equally, the role of a woman as a social being is ignored. There are no opportunities for women’s growth and self-education to confront gender stereotypes, develop interest, and have development and leisure.
Apart from such inequality, domestic violence is also common, but these actions are not considered criminal. The attitudes of men from Vejini towards women are reflected in the 2015 documentary movie called “Speak Up,” made by the Women Organization and Georgian National Movie Center.
Proposed Solution:
Our aim is to overcome stereotypes and support women. With this aim, we will hold movie screenings in the already existing movie hall in the museum. The hall opened in 1988 and its equipment is out of date, but its space and seating is still fine. Two times a month, we will hold screenings of films and documentaries on gender equality. In total, 20 movies will be screened, Georgian and foreign.
On the basis of preliminary agreement, Georgian movies will be provided to us by “Women’s Fund in Georgia.” We will advertise the event and the screening is for 30 people. After, we will hold discussions on women’s rights and gender equality.
In addition to being educational, they will also have a place for socializing and gathering, which will enable their personal growth and empowerment. We hope that there will be men among the attendants and that they will get involved in the discussions. We will spread the information about the movie screenings with the help of volunteers.
Representatives of local human rights NGO-s and public school teachers of civil education will be invited as facilitators.
Sustainability:
Arranging the movie club will be a big motivation for the society to hold not only movie screenings but also different civil or community events with their own initiative and this will return the function of civil society center to the museum.
Equal gender opportunity:
Both, women as well as men will be invited to the movie screenings. They will get involved in the discussions held after the movie screenings. Women as well as men facilitators will be invited. As for a broader picture, empowerment of women is equally useful for the whole community, for women as well as for men.
