Goals

Problem statement:

Georgia is a traditional country and with set gender roles. Although the majority of the country’s population recognizes gender equality in theory, in reality discrimination continues.

Workshops are held on this issue, but usually the targets are employees of the government or large organisations. For everyone else, the information comes through the media and is often twisted.

Several NGOs work on gender issues in the region. They hold workshops for adults, but the youth do not usually attend or think about the issues discussed. Books and other material on gender issues are not available to the youth living in the villages.

Proposed Solution:

We think realizing gender stereotypes from an early age is important. With this aim, sessions will be held in schools of 10 villages of Samegrelo with the pupils of final grades. 16 pupils – 8 boys and 8 girls will be selected from the school. The sessions will beon topics such as feminism, inequality, privilege, oppression, and stereotypes.

The sessions will be held by means of a projector – the students will be able to see the statistical data, videos, etc. related to the topic. The organizers will also have activities so students can see discrimination in practice.

Sustainability:

The aim of the project is to raise awareness on gender issues and after the completion of the project the students will be able to hold discussions on this topic with their peers. The students will learn that there may be many forms of oppression which seems non-existent at first glance. After the sessions the students will have basic information and motivation in order to make a change in the social rules on their own and to fight for the full realization of members of the society, for the equality in public or private life.

Equal gender opportunity:

Equal number of boys and girls will take part in the sessions. The sessions will help them reconsider the stereotypes and roles prevalent in the society, that are assigned according to genders.
