Goals

Problem statement:

This project consists of establishing a fully functional, high standard, English language classroom for children studying in the public school of Davitiani, in the Kakheti region, which can also serve as a meeting room.

The project will enhance the education of the children of Davitiani, as knowledge of the English language will significantly improve their lifelong learning skills. The new classroom will also help integrate the children with the world around them.

A high quality school is an important counter to depopulation, as many of the locals have left the village because of the lack of an effective educational systems. If interest in the school rises, interest in the village will rise as well. There are currently around 40 students at the school. They belong not only to ethnic minorities (Russians, Armenians, Azerbaijanis) but religious minorities (Jews, Baptists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Molokans etc.)

An experienced English teacher recently moved to the village to volunteer teaching, which significantly increased interest in the school. Since he began teaching English at the school several pupils have transferred, including some students from Azerbaijan and Russia. However the current classroom does not meet the standards of a modern, effective learning environment

In order to make the teaching process modern, interactive, joyful and more comprehensive, a relaxed learning environment must be provided and the classroom adapted to modern standards. This project has been authorized by the director of the school, who, like the current students and the American teacher, fully supports it.

Proposed Solution:

The following items are required to rehabilitate our school:

1. Computer - will make classes more interactive, fruitful and joyful. Children will be given the opportunity to listen to different videos, extracts from movies and interesting speeches and audio books.
2. Speakers - to accompany the computer so everyone can hear.
3. Projector - this will enable children to watch different TV shows and movies in the English language and deliver their presentations and homework in a more interactive way. The availability of a projector will enable the school to invite interesting guests, such as journalists, photographers, designers, doctors, lawyers, writers and NGO representatives, including members of Orbeliani, to share their knowledge and experience with the children.
4. Projector Screen - required to accompany the projector.
5. Books - the number of books at the school is limited, and especially those written in English.

Sustainability:

This project is not only necessary for current pupils but future generations. As mentioned above, the classroom will not only be used for conducting classes but for hosting interesting people, who will share their knowledge and experience with the children.

The classroom will remind people that the natives of Davitiani, who belong to ethnic and religious minorities, are as strong, clever, motivated and hardworking as the rest of us. The project will give these individuals opportunities they have never had before, and thus become self-sustaining as new generations of students wish to capitalise on these opportunities.

The project will also generate social media pages and raise consciousness about the school, its events, guests and presentations. Videos and other items such as blogs will be uploaded on these social media pages. Some of the most interesting projects and activities will be covered by Georgian news agencies.

Equal gender opportunity:

The project will be equally beneficial for both girls and boys. It will help them become more social and interact better with others. Invited guests will speak about different issues including the gender equality and its importance. As majority of students are from minority groups guests will also discuss historical issues including the history of the different religious groups represented in the school.
