Goals

Problem statement:

Mainly ethnic Kists live in Pankisi Gorge. The gorge is geographically isolated, surrounded by mountains from three sides. The youth are cut off from the cultural, educational or other important movements in Georgia.

In the villages, there is a lack of free space for communication, discussions, and the advancement of knowledge. Moreover, modern literature isn’t available to the youth. There is not a single book store or modern library.

Books are important for a person’s future development. Our organization intends to make books and modern literature more available to the local youth and create for them a free space for reading books, communications, discussions, meetings.

Already, we opened the first social cafe in Pankisi Gorge, where the youth have the opportunity to purchase food, use the internet and read fiction. We wish to have a literature corner represented more broadly in our social cafe, to offer the youth the bestsellers of modern Georgian and Foreign authors, examples of classic literature, interesting books and simply pulp literature.

Proposed Solution:

Already there is a social cafe is functioning. This cafe opened was funded by the "Children and Youth Development Fund“. At this stage only a small part of literature assembled.

We need both more books and more comfortable furniture for the space. We think that creation of such spaces in the gorge will positively affect the local youth (girls and boys), will draw them closer to books and will enable them to spend their free time more interestingly and fruitfully. While having such a space, they will be able to put into practice different interesting ideas and projects, such as book clubs.

Sustainability:

The rent, communal expenses or other types of expenses are covered by means of the social cafe income. The cafe is situated in the center of the gorge, in the vicinity of the school and cultural center. This place is usually crowded. It is possible to visit this place specially for a book or to get someone visiting with a different aim suddenly interested in a book.

Equal gender opportunity:

The literary space is intended for both, boys as well as girls, and for their joint meetings and activities.
