In the village Qvemo, the level of literacy is very low. Children do not have any literature for extracurricular reading at home. They grow up in an environment isolated from books.
Their knowledge is limited to school literature, therefore reading is a boring duty rather than a pleasant process. Besides, due to the poor school budget, the school has no resources to provide the use of visual methods or entertaining rebus-tests required for the pupils’ educational process, so the learning process is monotonous and limited to the materials given in the books.
Teachers trying to find new text struggle because they do not have the resources to create material, and electronic means are also limited.
As I have been teaching Georgian in the village school for 4 years, I believe that a “school printing house” would a way to get children interested in books.
We want to translate Azerbaijani fairy tales into Georgian and print and illustrate Georgian fairy-tales. This process will involve the pupils with drawing talent as well as those speaking Georgian and Azerbaijani languages.
Also, the printing house will publish a student-written school newspaper for display on the school walls. The visual methods printed by the printing house will make the process of explaining the lesson more diverse and easy to perceive for the pupils. Also, this will make a teacher’s work easier, because currently they are trying to make posters with the scarce resources they have at home.
The printer will be given to the school, which will be used by the pupils as well as teachers. They will jointly create learning resources, and hopefully be able to use them for several years. As for the sustainability, after providing the main technical base, funds will be allocated from the school budget in order to supply the "printing house" with stationary items, and the director will take on the responsibility over this.
