There are no professional courses in the village Jokolo in Pankisi Gorge for women and girls due to the high rate of early marriage and poor economic conditions. Sending young people to study in Tbilisi or elsewhere is usually too expensive for most residents.
I am a professional tailor also employed by KRDF in the Duisi Community Center where I teach sewing, but married girls can’t afford themselves to go to the center to study. That’s why the people have asked me to open my course at home and train 12 girls annually. Once they finish training, the girls can open shops in their villages because there are no professional tailors in Pankisi.
To provide this course, I need to arrange one room in the house with the necessary equipment. I own 2 old sewing machines, so I need a new sewing machine to train the students which costs 650 Gel.
I also need an overlock machine which costs 1096 Gel. The room will be equipped with the table for cutting and general work. During the study period, the girls will work on orders for the local village and be able to sell what they make.
We will help the orphan children and single people of the village reconstruct clothing with the purchased items. In the first year, I will train 12 girls for free and in the following years, I will teach this profession to other needy families’ children as arises.
It is part of our culture to help the needy communities and I already help many people. The students of the courses will be also involved in this. I will help the girls trained by me as well as provide recommendations for them to find jobs in local private studios or to set up their own shop.
Hopefully, this can help these girls have a fruitful career for many years.
Equal gender opportunity:
I am focusing on girls because the job opportunities for them are much smaller than for boys. However, everyone in Pankisi will benefit from having more tailors in the community.
